Switching CSS partner: the step-by-step guide without losses

A CSS switch happens at Merchant Center level and does not touch your Google Ads account. Campaigns, bid strategies, conversion data and history stay unchanged. In practice most partners complete the switch within 24 to 72 hours.

Short answer

Switching CSS partner means another Comparison Shopping Service claims your Merchant Center account and submits your Shopping ads under its CSS domain. You lose no campaign history, no quality score build-up and no conversion data, because nothing changes in your Google Ads account. Expect a short window of a few hours in which products are re-validated.

What actually changes

The CSS link on your Merchant Center account changes: the old partner releases the claim, the new partner claims it. Technically, that is the entire operation.

What does not change: your Google Ads account, campaign structure, budgets, bid strategies, audiences, conversion tracking and all historical data. Your product feed does not need rebuilding either, unless you switch feed provider at the same time.

What can fluctuate temporarily: right after the switch your products are re-validated. Expect a few hours in which impressions may dip. This recovers on its own and says nothing about long-term performance.

When switching makes sense

You pay a percentage while your Shopping spend has grown considerably. The break-even towards a fixed fee may already be behind you.

You expanded into several European markets and your current partner charges per market or does not cover all countries.

You buy feed management separately because your partner does not provide it — or the reverse: you pay for feed management you already do in-house.

Support or reporting structurally falls short. That is not a price argument, but a legitimate one: the auction margin is identical at every approved CSS partner, so service is the real differentiator.

Where switches go wrong in practice

Cancelling too early. Only terminate your current contract once the new partner has confirmed it can claim your Merchant Center and your notice period allows it. A gap between two CSS links drops you back to Google's own CSS, with the corresponding margin.

Changing other things at the same time. During the switch week, change nothing about bids, budgets or feed structure. Otherwise you cannot attribute any performance difference.

No baseline. Before switching, record CPC, impression share, clicks and conversions for the last 28 days. Without that, any later evaluation is guesswork.

Judging too fast. Evaluate only after at least two weeks of stable data, and look primarily at cost per click and impression share — not at absolute click counts.

Switching in six steps

  1. Record your baseline Export CPC, impression share, clicks and conversions for the last 28 days, per market.
  2. Check your notice period Review the term and notice period in your current contract before committing to a new partner.
  3. Choose on your own criteria Compare country coverage, the pricing model at your spend level, and how much feed work you want to outsource.
  4. Have the new claim prepared The new partner requests access to your Merchant Center and stages the CSS link.
  5. Release the old claim Only now release the old CSS link, so the new one can be activated immediately and no gap appears.
  6. Evaluate after two weeks Compare CPC and impression share with your baseline. Change nothing else in that period.

Frequently asked questions about switching CSS partner

Do I lose campaign history when switching CSS partner?

No. The switch happens at Merchant Center level. Your Google Ads account, campaigns, bid strategies and historical data stay fully intact.

How long does a CSS switch take?

With most partners the link is active within 24 hours, extending to 72 hours when several markets or feeds are involved.

Will my impressions drop during the switch?

Briefly, yes, because products are re-validated after the switch. This typically lasts a few hours and recovers on its own.

Can I use several CSS partners at once?

Each Merchant Center account has one active CSS link. With multiple Merchant Center accounts, for example per market, you can work with different partners.

Do I have to rebuild my product feed?

Not if you only change CSS partner. Feed work is only involved when you also change feed provider.

What if I want to go back?

Returning to Google's own CSS or to a previous partner is always possible via the same claim procedure. There is no technical lock-in.
